There are four types of Tournament in Heian City Story, where the player can enter their residents into different competitions to win Gold, Research Points, and Land Value Seeds.
Sumo
The player chooses their best resident with high Stamina and Skill stat. In the minigame, the player can use Aura, which gives a burst of power that pushes the opponent across the screen, or Defense, which blocks the opponent's attack. The game can be won in two ways: either the enemy runs out of stamina from the player blocking their attacks and the player knocks them over, or the player is strong enough to push them off the right hand side of the screen and out of the ring.

Poetry
The player choose their best 3 residents with high Smarts and Insight stats. When the match begins, the player can choose which order their residents perform against which opponent: ideally, to win, their resident's rank should be higher than the opponent in order to win, as they will receive a higher base score and make less mistakes. During each match, the player can press the Support button, which increases the points gain on the particular poetry strip where the button is triggered, and runs out when that strip ends. It is better to trigger Support when the strip is longer (strips 2, 4 and 5).

The player chooses their best resident with high Insight and Skill stats. The player choose their best resident with high Insight and Skill stats. When the race begins, the player can move their horse up or down in order to block their opponent, and use Dash which causes your horse to have a temporary burst of speed. Dash will gradually refill and can be used multiple times per race - the speed it refills (and the overall speed of your horse) is based on your resident's stats. It is usually beneficial to activate Dash after your opponents have used theirs up, and to save your final Dash for the end of the race to ensure you overtake at the end.

Kickball
The player chooses their best 6 residents with the highest Skill and Stamina stats. The goal is to beat all 3 opponent teams in a game of kick-ups, without dropping the ball. Your next score to beat can be seen in the top left of the screen, with the teams represented by bronze, silver and gold trophies by rank. The amount of consecutive bounces the team can hit without missing is based on how high their stats are, but it is better for the player to directly control the game themself, by pressing the Left and Right buttons when the ball is about to reach the next player. The player can end the game after the gold trophy score has been beaten, there is no additional bonus for continuing after the gold score +1.
